Nepal’s Gen Z Protests: Social Media Ban, Corruption, and Clashes

Nepal is currently experiencing one of its most intense youth-led uprisings in recent years, as thousands of people, especially from Generation Z, have taken to the streets in response to the government’s decision to ban major social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X. While the authorities defended the move as an effort to control fake news, hate speech, and online fraud, many citizens saw it as an attack on their freedom of expression and an attempt to silence voices demanding accountability. The ban quickly became the spark for wider demonstrations against political corruption, poor governance, and economic stagnation, issues that have frustrated Nepalis for years. Protesters marched near the parliament in Kathmandu carrying slogans like “Enough is Enough” and “End to Corruption,” accusing leaders of adopting authoritarian attitudes. Clashes broke out when demonstrators entered restricted areas, leading security forces to use water cannons, batons, rubber bullets, and tear gas. The violence turned deadly, leaving at least 19 people killed—including 17 in Kathmandu and 2 in Itahari—and dozens more injured, with hospitals even affected by tear gas. In the aftermath, a curfew was imposed, the army was deployed, and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned on moral grounds. The United Nations has called for an immediate and transparent investigation, raising concerns about excessive force. For many Nepalis, the protests are not only about social media but also a demand for honesty, justice, and change. This movement highlights Gen Z’s determination to fight corruption and shape Nepal’s democratic future.
